When the 90's rolled around, Metallica released a self titled album, nicknamed the black album. This record featured a softer, more mainstream sound, but still had that characteristic Metallica edge to it. After years of tuoring for the black album, Metallica finally went back into the studio to record their 6th album, Load. Load had a much different sound than any of their previous stuff, opting for a more bluesy, hard rock style than the speedmetal that everyone associated the band with. Not too long after Load came out, a follow up album was released, ReLoad, which consisted of other songs that were written during the same time but didn't make it onto the album. Afterwards, an collection of various old cover songs from the 80's was compiled with brand new covers, and released as Garage Inc. And not too long after that came out, Metallica recorded a concert in which they played many of their classic songs, as well as some new ones, with the San Francisco Symphony. The result was the S&M album. Years later, in 2003, Metallica put out their most recent album, St. Anger. The album had mixed reactions among fans and non fans alike, but now, more than two years after its release, hopefully the controversy has died down, and we can all look foward to the next album.

Metallica is a legendary band that helped define the genre of thrash metal (though nowadays their sound can be considered more hard rock or garage than thrash). Their first lineup was James Hetfield (vocals and rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Ron McGoveney (bass). Ron was replaced with Cliff Burton and Dave was replaced with Kirk Hammett and they released their first album (Kill 'em All) in 1983. The rest of their albums include Ride the Lightning (1984), Master of Puppets (1986), ...And Justice For All (1988), Metallica (aka ''The Black Album'')(1991), Load (1996), Reload (1997), Garage Inc. (1998), S&M (1999), and St. Anger (2003). During their Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton died in a tragic bus accident on September 27, 1986. He was replaced with Jason Newsted, and Jason left in the late 90's and was replaced with Robert Trujillo. Metallica has gone through their share of struggles and hardships (Cliff's death, James' alchohol problems, Lars filing a lawsuit against Napster, and conflicts with each other), but they have managed to withstand the test of time and give it their all. Metallica is a great band and those who disagree need to stop making a big deal about it.

The band from the black album on turned their back on metal and gave it a middle fingered salute. They viewed themselves as bigger than it and they wanted mass popularity which is NOT metal. They are probably the best examples of "a sellout" in the world of music. Abandoning the original vision and integrity for a different approach which is geared around mass popularity as opposed to doing things for the music. The real truth why Lar$ and co decided to sellout out is that they'd used up all their ideas, all their Mustaine riffs and they'd tried being progressive on "...and justice for all" and died on their ass. They had 2 options. Proceed on trying to make better metal albums or use their big fanbase and a pop producer to produce a simple pop metal record which the chart fans will love. James Hetfield was also seen around this time saying bands like Slayer and Exodus are "still doing the same old thing, we've progressed from that". Slowing your sound down, Softening it and making it more digestible is only progression towards one thing. Being a pop band. Even in the 80's these guys were dicks. Stealing riffs from original member, Dave Mustaine and not giving him credit. They've even stated themselves they're selfish people. This is evident in their apathy towards fans of their metal work and the fact they keep putting out half assed music on albums since the black album simply because they can't submit effort and mainly becasue they CAN.

One of the greatest thrash/speed metal bands ever to grace the earth, who have gained much criticism (some of which is understandable) over the suing of Napster for illegal downloads of their music and for the rather shite St. Anger album. Seeing as Metallica are my favourite band this is my attempt to be as unbiased as possible. Ok, I admit St. Anger was one of the worst albums ever made by a band of such quality. And maybe Load and ReLoad disappointed many Diehard Metal fans. But they were still good quality, but rather attempted to aim at a wider, more accessible market with a more rock sound. Megadeth and Metallica have shared many feuds over the last couple of decades, but there is no denying that Dave Mustaine is a far better guitarist than Kirk Hammett. On the flip side I think James is a better vocalist. If you combine the lyrics and vocals of Four Horsemen with the guitaring of Mechanix, the song would be truly amazing. It is a great shame that Dave left the band at such a promising stage because he in my opinion, would of had a major influence on the direction of Metallica. The band has been through a lot too, losing a member is not easy. Cliff was an amazing bassist and is sorely missed by many who idolised and loved him. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Metallica have become famous and people are annoyed because they are more mainstream but lets be honest even the last 3 albums have seldom been played on UK radio. I have only ever heard Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters played on radio..They aren't sellouts-just clever businessmen. P.S Old school metal rules. New stuff sucks...

Then they met up. and became One of the most celebrated and talented metal groups of the eighties, defining thrash and metal music all together with their roaring guitar. Blistering fast solos, And they're thumping bass and drums. Them, along with Slayer, Pantera, and Iron Maiden helped bring The music to a much higher level. Starting with "Kill 'em All" featuring the well known tracks, "Seek and Destroy", "No remorse", "Whiplash", And "the four horsemen". Soon followed Ride the lightning, which was an instant classic with all of its heavy melodies and lightning fast solos. And then, Came the album that i think defined Metallica better then anything else of their creation. Master of Puppets. This album featured "Battery", And the crowd favorite and title track, Master of puppets. But on the master of puppets tour, tragedy struck, And Metallica's tour bus slid on the infamous "black ice" and rolled. And killed Their bassist. cliff Burton. After his death, Metallica refused to be called Metallica. Or even a band in general. Until they found Jason Newsted. And he filled the shoes of cliff as well as anyone could.then, they made "...And justice for all". Which in my eyes. Was their last great album. They utilized Kirk's Ability to play classic. With modern day metal. which made this usurp all their other albums in record time. Then, Around 1990, They had a vision for the fifth metallica album. Nicknamed "black" . A Self titled compilation featuring "Enter sandman", and "wherever i may roam". Which were pretty much the only decent tracks. After This, they made "Load". Which featured tracks such as "Aint my bitch". Which is my favorite off that album. "King nothing", And "Until it sleeps". But this album wasn't metal. It was more Hard Rock. Then came Re-load. An album with tracks that didn't make it onto Load. My favorite would be "fuel". It was just excellent. But that was the only song i liked. After Re-load, Came easily their worst music ever. With St. anger. This Cd got people's hopes up with the single "St anger". Which was decent. But then with tracks like frantic and other stuff. People grew to hate it. Metallica's presents members consist of [James Hetfeild] (vocals and rythm guitar) [Kirk Hammett] (lead guitar) [Rob Trujillo] (bass guitar) and [Lars Ulrich] (Drums and percussion). The original members of Metallica were James Hetfeiled (vocals and bass) Dave Mustane (lead guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums and percussion). Before the bands first Album "Kill 'em All" was produced, Dave Mustane was kicked out of the band and replaced with Kirk Hammett. Mustane later formed [mega death] Cliff Burton took over Hetfeilds part on bass. During a tour of "Master of Puppets", the bands 3rd Album, Metallica's tour bus, rolled over off the road, killing Cliff Burton. Random Fact: There is some controversey over Cliff Burtons death however. It is not known whether the bus itself rolling on top of Burton is what killed him. It is rumored that when a picker truck was lifting the bus off of Burton, the line broke, causing the bus to fall back on Cliff Burton. After the unfortunate death of Cliff Burton, there was a major decrease in the "metal" value of Metallica's music. Many songs had much "deeper" meanings. Heavily distorted guitars seemed to be fading more and more. The next bassist for metallica was Jason Newstead, an incredible bass player. His true talents were never fully unleashed however because of the major rejection of him from the other members. Jason soon after left the band, and was replaced placed with Rob Trujillo. Random Fact: Finding the next bassist was not an easy or quick task. For one Metallica Album "St. Anger", Metallica's record producer Bob Rock filled on bass. In 2002 Trujillo was found. Through the time of Metallica 19 records have been released, and a new one is expected Fall 2007. S&M St. Anger During the recording of St Anger, they had cameras filming them, which eventually formed the Documentry 'Some Kind of Monster', which revealed cracks in the band, but they pulled through, and made a decent album, although some people didn't like it, because it related to the date at the time (No solos etc.). Hopefully, 'Tallica should be back in the studio soon and recording a new album, on par with MoP and Metallica.

Metallica is a legendary metal band whose music can be found under such genres as metal, thrash, and garage. They formed in California in the early 1980's with the original lineup of James Hetfield (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Ron McGovney (bass guitar). Ron wasn't exactly pulling his weight in the band, and he was replaced once they discovered Cliff Burton. Cliff would only join if the rest of the band moved to San Francisco, and so they did just that. Not long after, Dave was replaced with Kirk Hammett because of his alchohol problems. Metallica released their first album, Kill 'em All, in 1983. Then in 1984, Ride the Lightning was released. It seemed the band was heading for success when they released their third album, Master of Puppets, but their career nearly came to a halt with the tragic death of Cliff during a tour bus accident on September 27th, 1986 when they were on their way to Denmark. But Metallica soon found a new bassist (Jason Newsted)and released ...And Justice For All. By that time, they had entered of world of sex, drugs, and alchohol, but that didn't affect their music until much later. In 1991, their self-titled album, which is also known as the ''Black Album,'' was released and it became their best-selling album yet. Then in 1996, Load was released, followed by Reload in 1997. In 1998, they released Garage Inc., a compilation of cover songs originally done by artists such as The Misfits, Thin Lizzy, Nick Cave, Mercyful Fate, and Diamondhead. A year later they released another compilation called S&M, which is a bunch of their songs performed live with the San Francisco orchestra, including several songs that aren't on any of their albums such as No Leaf Clover, Ecstasy of Gold, and -Human. Not long after that, James went to rehab for eight months on account of his alchohol problems. And by that time, Jason had left the band because of personal reasons and also to launch his new band, Echobrain. To add to their problems, Lars had recently filed a lawsuit against Napster because their songs were being sold online for free, therefore they were losing money. Because of that, some of their fans got angry and turned against them. James returned from rehab in time to record Metallica's most current album, St. Anger, at the Presidio, a military base that's no longer in use. Bob Rock, their producer, played bass on that album since they had not yet found Robert Trujillo, their replacement for Jason. Around this time, they released a documentary called Some Kind of Monster that talks mostly about their struggles as a band and the counseling they've gone through. All in all, Metallica is a great band that has withstood the test of time and will most likely be around for many more years.

James HEtfield the main songwriter is surprisingly self taught, so is drummer Lars Ulrich, but not Kirk Hammett, who is taught by Joe Satriani, and Cliff Burton outgrew all his teacher, and then taught himself, and Jason Newsted wasn't self taught, and neither was Robert Trujilo. They are a great band, and deserve all the recognition tehy recieve as the best Metal band of all time. They also are great people, and have tryed their hardest to get off drugs and alcohol, which they have done successfully, and are now obviously heaps different, but better people. Eventually, Cliff Burton was replaced with Jason Newsted, and Metallica released thier 4th album, ...And Justice For All, in 1988, which was suprisingly a good album, however, without Cliff Burton, Metallica slowly started a downward spiral in 1991, when they released thier 5th album, thier self titled album commonly refered to as the Black Album. In 1996, they released possibly thier worst album ever, Load, followed by another album, Reload, in 1997. These albums were more Blues/Rock than thier earlier Metal genre. In 1998 they released thier next album, Garage Inc. which was still very sub-standard compared to thier old stuff. In 1999, they released the S&M album which was basically a live version of them playing all of thier old songs. Around this time, Lars Ulrich complained about thier fans downloading Metallica songs for free, which further hurt fan support for Metallica, and around this time they became sell-outs, and in 2003, they released St.Anger, which was thier closest produced music to Metal, since the late 80s/early 90s, but Kirk Hammett doesn't do a single solo in the entire album, which is a vital part of the Metal genre. Metallica is still around today, but I doubt they will ever produce songs as good as thier songs in the 80s.

They produced a album called ST.Anger after James was released from re-hab due to a serious alchohol addiction[Rock on James for stepping up and being a man about it]This album is known to many to completely suck,however this select few have no taste in real music and do not realize that this album had the deepest lyrics of all of them.All members however are family oriented and have families of their own.Very kind to fans [I've met them at every tour and they have been very respectful]and have a good sense of humor.All in all a group of good guys\!

Tragically, in 1986 Cliff Burton died shortly after recording "Master of Puppets". Burton was replaced by bassist Jason Newsted. Although no one could replace Cliff Burton, the show must go on. If you don't believe me, just listen to his bass solo "(Anesthesia)--Pulling Teeth). Newsted's First Record with metallica was "Garage Days Re-Revisited", An EP with five songs. In 1988, they released "...And Justice For All", with their most popular thrash song, "One". Sadly, three years later, Metallica sold out with "Metallica" a.k.a. "Black Album". It was a decent album, but it had a mainstream sound and was twice as popular as any other Metallica album, causing Metallica fans to be also labeled as Daniel Powter fans, and The Fray fans.

I'd say more up there, but i ran out of space. So, to sum it all up, Metallica is better than megadeth, suck now but have the occasional good song, *coughstonecoldcrazycough*, and need to be good again.
